LouVUE's Weekly Dish: April 21st - 27th, 2025

April 27, 2025 7 min read

Welcome to LouVUE’s Louisville Food Safety Lowdown!

Hey food lovers and Ville diners! It’s that time again where we dish out the real talk on what’s cooking — or not quite cooking safely — around our town. For the week starting April 21st through the 27th, 2025, I’ve sifted through the latest inspections and follow-ups, and boy, do we have some sizzling updates and a few cold chills to share. Whether you’re a BBQ connoisseur, a food truck fanatic, or just here to grab a quick bite, this week’s report covers the juicy details you need to know.

LouVUE by the Numbers: The Louisville Food Safety Beat

Alright, let’s crunch some numbers before we bite into the meaty details:

  • Total Inspections: 198 (keeping Louisville on its toes!)
  • Regular Inspections: 172
  • Complaint Inspections: 3
  • Other Types: 10
  • Follow-Up (Re-Check) Inspections: 13

It’s clear the health inspectors are hustling to keep our plates safe. Remember: A restaurant’s grade depends on both their score and any critical violations. To recap:

  • Grade A (Green): Score 85-100% with no critical violations. The gold standard!
  • Grade B (Blue): Often the comeback kids after follow-ups.
  • Grade C (Red): Anything below 85% or with any critical violation. These spots need your caution and a prompt fix!

Second Servings: Follow-Up Flavor

Follow-ups are like second chances in the kitchen — inspectors return to see if places addressed their last issues. This week, we had 13 follow-ups, and most of them served up a perfect score of 100 or a solid A grade, which is music to my food safety ears!

  • COCO BONGOS #2 and CTA - BRATS & HOTDOGS came back with a flawless 100 score. No grade listed, but a perfect score usually means they nailed their fixes.

  • Dakshin Indian Restaurant at 4742 Bardstown Rd earned an A grade with a 93 score — spicy and safe!

  • Drake’s BHG Louisville #2 hit a solid A with 100 — cheers to clean sips and bites!

  • Egbert Concessions’ Gyro and Steak Tips both scored 100, showing those food trucks are keeping their cool.

  • Gingers Lemonade #1 and Libbertt Concessions #2 also scored perfect 100s — sweet lemonade and clean kitchens, folks!

  • Mak Mak’s BBQ #1 had a curious double follow-up: one inspection scored 0 with no grade, and another on the same day scored 100. Since a zero score usually indicates missing or incomplete data, we can’t conclude if it’s a safety issue this time without more info. But they redeemed themselves quickly with the 100 score. Something fishy? Possibly just paperwork speed bumps.

  • Pier 17 Cajun Seafood & Bar and Zaxby’s #51501 both returned with stellar A grades and perfect 100 scores, proving that seafood and chicken can be both delicious and safe.

  • Sam Hamilton Concession Stand also scored 100, keeping the concession stands squeaky clean.

Follow-ups are crucial because they confirm whether eateries took food safety seriously after initial findings. Seeing so many perfect scores is a great sign that Louisville’s dining spots are committed to keeping your meal safe and sound.

Cautionary Cuisine: Red Flags on the Menu

Now, let’s get to the heat of the matter — the eight establishments that scored a ‘C’ grade this week. A ‘C’ means there were either critical violations or a score below 85%, signaling serious issues. These spots must act fast and often face a follow-up inspection within 7-10 days. Here’s the rundown:

Brown J. Graham Cafe

335 W Broadway, Louisville, KY 40202

  • Score: 92
  • Violation: Critical — Improper cold holding temps on TCS foods like cheese, raw salmon, chicken, and veggies all hovering between 48°F-50°F (yikes, that’s well above the safe 41°F max!).

LouVUE’s Take: This classy-sounding cafe needs a chill pill — literally! Holding foods too warm invites bacteria to the party and nobody wants that. With a pretty solid score of 92, this critical violation is a glaring red light. Keep an eye out if you’re craving their fare.

Brown Lobby Bar

335 W Broadway, Louisville, KY 40203

  • Score: 94
  • Violation: Critical — Cold holding failures with beer cheese, cut tomatoes, and calamari sitting at 54°F-56°F. Nope, not the kind of warm and fuzzy you want with your bar snacks!

LouVUE’s Take: Looks like the ‘Brown’ duo shares a chill problem. This bar’s keeping things too warm for safety, which is a major buzzkill. Just because it’s a bar doesn’t mean the food gets a pass!

Eden & Kissi Food Truck #1

  • Score: 91
  • Violations: Two criticals — hot holding chicken at 119°F (corrected) and cold holding cheese and cooked veggies at a dangerous 53°F (items discarded).

LouVUE’s Take: Food trucks are fun, but this one’s coolers weren’t cool enough and their hot foods needed a temperature tune-up. They did discard those unsafe items, so props for quick action. Still, this one’s a reminder to always check if that food truck’s fridge is running!

Kabuki Food Truck Cane Run

  • Score: 88
  • Violations: Multiple criticals — raw eggs stored at room temp (discarded), and sushi rice not held properly with no time records. Brown rice also out of temp with no documentation.

LouVUE’s Take: Sushi-loving folks, beware! This truck had a double whammy on cold holding and record keeping. Raw eggs at room temp? That’s a no-go. Time and temperature controls are your sushi’s best friends. This is a textbook example of why documentation matters as much as refrigeration.

Male High School Football Concession

4400 Preston Hwy, Louisville, KY 40213

  • Score: 98
  • Violation: Critical — Presence of roaches.

LouVUE’s Take: Roaches at a high school football concession? That’s definitely a fumble. Even a high score can’t cover for critters in the kitchen. Definitely a red flag for parents and fans craving snacks at the game.

Pho Cafe on Bardstown

1704 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40205

  • Score: 82
  • Violations: A whopping nine violations, many critical:
    • Bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods (corrected on site)
    • Cross-contamination risks
    • Dirty deli slicer
    • Cold holding failures (rice at 70°F discarded)
    • Improper cooling times (pork held at 55°F for hours, discarded)
    • Date marking issues (corrected)
    • Improper thawing methods
    • Unsanitized wiping cloths
    • Dirty floors, walls, and ceilings

LouVUE’s Take: Pho real, this place got slammed with critical violations that could cause serious foodborne illnesses. The poor hygiene, temperature slip-ups, and sanitation issues spell trouble. With an 82 score and criticals, this is the kind of place you want to see improve ASAP before you slurp that noodle soup.

Smor Bakeri at Oskar’s

3797 Poplar Level Rd, Louisville, KY 40213

  • Score: 97
  • Violations: None listed despite the C grade.

LouVUE’s Take: Hmmm, a C grade but no violations listed? This could be a data blip or minor infractions not detailed here. With a high score of 97, I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled for next time.

Sugar Diva Bakery and Cake

7611 Preston Hwy Ste A, Louisville, KY 40219

  • Score: 85
  • Violations: Two criticals:
    • Poor date marking on several foods (flan, macaroni, milk)
    • Raw eggs stored at room temperature

LouVUE’s Take: Déjà vu? Nope, just a sweet spot getting a little sour with basic cold-holding and labeling rules. Eggs at room temp and missing date marks are rookie mistakes for a bakery. Those treats better be monitored closely next time!

The Check, Please: Louisville’s Food Safety Scorecard

This week’s report is a mixed bag — great news with many follow-ups turning critical issues into A-grade wins, but also a reminder that some places are still struggling with fundamental food safety basics. If you’re planning to dine out, do a mental check: Is your favorite spot following proper cold and hot holding rules? Are they clean and free from pests? If not, it’s perfectly okay to ask questions or even vote with your feet.

Remember, food safety isn’t just about grades on a door; it’s about protecting your health and enjoying Louisville’s vibrant culinary scene without worry. Until next week, stay savvy, stay safe, and keep those taste buds happy!
