Welcome to the Louisville Food Safety Roundup: April 28th - May 4th, 2025

Hold onto your forks, my fellow food lovers! This week, we’re diving deep into the simmering pot of Louisville’s restaurant inspections. From sizzling follow-ups to some simmering issues in our ‘C’ grade kitchen crews, there’s plenty to chew on. Whether you’re dining out or ordering in, you deserve a front-row seat to the food safety scoop that keeps our Ville’s meals safe and tasty.

LouVUE by the Numbers

Let’s start with the stats that matter:

  • Total Inspections: 299
  • Breakdown:
    • OTHER: 7
    • SURVEY: 88
    • REGULAR: 182
    • COMPLAINT: 1
  • Follow-Up Inspections: 21 (those important re-checks that keep restaurants on their toes!)

What do these numbers tell us? Louisville’s health inspectors are out there, ensuring that our city’s eateries are keeping it clean and safe. With 182 regular inspections, plus follow-ups and surveys, the system is working hard to protect our palates.

Second Servings: Re-check Revelations

Follow-up inspections are like encore performances — they show if a restaurant has learned its safety choreography or if it’s still missing steps. This week, we saw 21 follow-ups, and spoiler alert: a lot of 100s and near-perfect scores.

  • Brown J. Graham Cafe & Brown Lobby Bar (335 W Broadway): Both served up fresh A grades with perfect 100 scores. Bravo! This tells us their previous issues were fully handled — no more cold dishes on this menu.

  • Pho Cafe on Bardstown (1704 Bardstown Rd): Another perfect 100 and an A grade. Clearly, Pho-nomenal work here.

  • Sugar Diva Bakery and Cake (7611 Preston Hwy): Scored a sweet 99 and earned an A. The only thing sweeter than their desserts is that spotless kitchen.

  • Kabuki Food Truck Cane Run: A perfect 100 and an A grade. Food trucks, you’re showing us how it’s done!

  • Eden & Kissi Food Truck #1: A stellar 99 and an A. Street eats, but make it safe.

  • Many others (Black Caviar Catering, Daddy’s Dogs Catering, Da Shack, E&M Concessions, Mac Truck, Nuchas, SGS Food Mart, Simply Southern, Snell Concessions): Scored high 90s to 100, though several didn’t receive a formal grade (possibly because they are mobile or temporary setups). Keep in mind, a follow-up with a score but no grade still shows improvement, but without the full context, we can’t say if it’s a perfect fix or a “needs more work” scenario.

LouVUE’s Take: Follow-ups are the unsung heroes of food safety — they prove restaurants care enough to fix problems. Seeing so many near-perfect and perfect scores here is reassuring. Your fave spots aren’t just serving good food; they’re serving it clean and safe.

Cautionary Cuisine: The ‘C’ Grade Chronicles

Ah, the infamous ‘C’ grade — the culinary caution light flashing red. A ‘C’ means the establishment scored below 85% or has critical violations. Critical violations are the serious stuff that could lead to foodborne illnesses. A single critical violation automatically lands a place in the ‘C’ club, with a follow-up inspection required within 7-10 days. Let’s break down this week’s ‘C’ grade cast:

1. Boys & Girls Haven #1

Address: 2301 Goldsmith Ln, Louisville, KY 40218

  • Score: 88 (just shy of a B, but those critical violations weigh heavy)
  • Violations:
    • Employees were caught enjoying a personal drink right on the prep table next to food items (critical, though corrected) — a classic “hands off the food prep zone” rule breaker.
    • Food lacked proper date marking, which is a big no-no in tracking freshness and safety (also corrected).
    • Sanitizer bucket was missing proper labeling, and chemicals were not stored correctly (both fixed but critical).
    • Hot holding temperatures were off; burgers held at 88°F had to be reheated to safe temps.

LouVUE’s Take: This one’s a red flag combo platter. Even though corrections were made, these critical slip-ups show how easy it is for safety to slip when staff get a little too casual. The hot holding issue especially is a recipe for bacteria growth. Let’s hope their follow-up heats things up properly!

2. Hyderabad House Indian Cuisine

Address: 12412 Shelbyville Rd, Louisville, KY 40243

  • Score: 89
  • Violation: Lack of proper date labeling on cooked foods (critical).

LouVUE’s Take: Date marking might sound minor, but it’s vital for food safety and inventory control. Without it, old food might hang around too long and crash the safety party. Hyderabad House needs to mark it or lose it!

3. Oriental Cafe

Address: 3360 Hikes Ln, Louisville, KY 40220

  • Score: 92
  • Violation: Dishes not sanitized properly after rinsing (critical).

LouVUE’s Take: Clean plates, folks, not just rinsed but sanitized! This violation means a risk of cross-contamination. A slip in dish hygiene is no small matter, especially in busy kitchens.

4. Smokeasy The Private Lounge

Address: 566 S 5th St, Louisville, KY 40202

  • Score: 93
  • Violation: TCS (Time/Temperature Control for Safety) foods not held at proper cold temperatures (raw chicken, ground beef, fish, eggs at 47-49°F).

LouVUE’s Take: This is a biggie. Improper cold holding temps can quickly turn food into a bacterial playground. Raw proteins especially need that chill factor. Smokeasy needs to cool it down ASAP.

5. Zoo Dippin’ Dots Gorilla

Address: 1100 Trevilian Way, Louisville, KY 40213

  • Score: 98 (high score but still a ‘C’ due to critical violation)
  • Violation: Hot water system not sufficient for peak demands (critical).

LouVUE’s Take: Hot water isn’t just for handwashing drama — it’s critical for sanitizing dishes and surfaces. Even with a high score, this plumbing issue is a red flag. If your hot water taps out, so does your safety.

The Check, Please: What’s on Your Food Safety Menu?

Overall, Louisville’s food scene is cooking well with plenty of green lights and A grades shining bright. Our follow-ups show most places are on the up-and-up, fixing problems and serving safely. But the ‘C’ grades remind us that even the tastiest dishes can be marred by careless food safety missteps.

So next time you dine out or order in, remember the grade isn’t just a letter — it’s a sign of the care behind your meal. Keep an eye on your favorite spots, and don’t be shy to ask about their food safety practices. Because when it comes to what we eat, knowing the score is half the flavor.

Stay safe, stay hungry, and as always, keep it LouVUE clean!
