Summer Sizzles, Inspections Fizzle?

Welcome back to another spicy serving of food safety realness, Louisville! Whether you’re chilling with pizza, wrangling kids at daycare, or hunting down the best Latin market deals, this week’s inspection report is hotter than July. From pizza parlors caught in a cold snap (literally), to deli drama and international flavor, LouVUE is here to slice through the static. Get ready for the heat, folks—because some kitchens got more than they bargained for.

This week’s scoop: July 14th through July 20th, 2025. Grab your forks (and maybe your hand sanitizer), let’s dig in!

LouVUE by the Numbers

  • Total Inspections: 174
    • Regular Inspections: 135
    • Other Types (Various): 12
    • Surveys (Routine Checks): 16
  • Follow-Up Inspections (Re-checks): 11

That’s a plateful! Remember, regular inspections are Louisville’s bread and butter, but follow-ups are where the real plot twists happen—think of them as sequels with higher stakes (and less popcorn).

Second Servings: Return Engagements & Redemption Recipes

Follow-up inspections are like reality show reunions—will there be redemption arcs, or just more drama? These re-checks happen after prior issues, to make sure problems are fixed before you sit down to eat. Let’s see who cleaned up their act, and who’s still got some explaining to do:

  • CARALI’S RESTAURANT (5439 NEW CUT RD) got the gold star treatment—scoring a sparkling A with a 99.
  • LAS CHAMAS (8019 DIXIE HWY #104) and RALLY’S #8248 (5506 NEW CUT RD) also made LouVUE proud, both landing at A and 99. Somebody’s been studying for their food safety finals!
  • SOUTH ASIAN MARKET (2817 DEL RIO PL STE 116A): This week’s “Most Improved?” This spot appeared three times in follow-up data:
    • One inspection posted a perfect 100 (but with no listed grade—that’s some mysterious curry!),
    • Another officially scored an A at 100,
    • One had no grade or score—LouVUE can’t tell if they’re winning or just camera-shy.
  • SPEEDWAY #9783 (4900 OUTER LOOP) ran two follow-ups:
    • One with a perfect 100 but no grade,
    • The other finally locking down an A at 100. Sometimes, you just have to run the extra lap.
  • SUBWAY #22185 (533 N 22ND ST) freshened up with an A (99).
  • SUPERMERCADO LA ROSITA (5059 PRESTON HWY)—oh boy, here’s the drama:
    • One follow-up scored a 99, but no grade (mysterious!),
    • Another clocked in at C (96).

LouVUE’s Take:

Some follow-ups have missing scores or grades (see SOUTH ASIAN MARKET, SPEEDWAY, and SUPERMERCADO LA ROSITA). That’s not a salsa spill, that’s just the data—LouVUE believes in transparency, so sharing as-is. But a C on follow-up? Not what we want to see! For everyone who bounced back to an A, keep those gloves on!

Why Do Follow-Ups Matter? A follow-up is your “second chance”: it’s where inspectors check if previous problems—sometimes critical ones—have been fixed. If you see a restaurant with a recent follow-up and a Grade B or C, be alert—those issues were serious enough to require another look! (Remember: Grade A means 85+ and no criticals. B means issues lingered but were fixed enough to re-open. C means big trouble, with critical violations or a low score.)

Cautionary Cuisine: Pizza Pains, Deli Drama & Shenanigan’s Shenanigans

A “C” grade in Louisville means things got real: either the score dipped below 85, or a critical food safety violation was found. Criticals are high-risk for foodborne illness—yep, just one can bring the hammer down! The city requires a follow-up in 7-10 days, so expect to see some of these names again unless they shape up fast.

🍕 California Pizza Kitchen

Address: 7900 SHELBYVILLE RD, LOUISVILLE, KY 40222
Score: 93
Grade: C
Violations:

  • Critical: Proper Cold Holding Temperatures—TCS (Time/Temperature Control for Safety) foods not kept at 41°F or below. The food was discarded.

LouVUE’s Take: When the pizza’s not cool, neither is the kitchen! Cold holding failures can let bacteria run wild. Glad the unsafe items were tossed, but this is a textbook critical—it only takes one slip to flip the grade to a big red C. Yikes!

🧒 International Kids Academy

Address: 3630 ELDERWOOD WAY, LOUISVILLE, KY 40215
Score: 94
Grade: C
Violations:

  • Critical: Insects, Rodents, and Animals Not Present—Observed small ant in kitchen. Pest control needed, and documentation required.

LouVUE’s Take: The only thing that should be crawling around a daycare kitchen is a toddler with a juice box. Ants in the kitchen? That’s a fast track to a C. Parents, keep an eye out for that follow-up report!

🥪 Paul’s Commissary Deli and Prep

Address: 4601 JENNINGS LN, LOUISVILLE, KY 40218
Score: 97
Grade: C
Violations:

  • No specific violations listed for this C grade.

LouVUE’s Take: This one’s a little mysterious. C grade, high score, but no specific violation details in the dataset—so we’re left guessing. Maybe an unlisted critical? Either way, a C is a C, and LouVUE will be watching for their next move.

🥘 Paul’s Commissary Main Kitchen

Address: 4601 JENNINGS LN, LOUISVILLE, KY 40218
Score: 89
Grade: C
Violations:

  • Critical: Improper cooking temps for seafood and rice (quarantined/discarded)
  • Critical: Improper cold holding temps for TCS foods (over 41°F; quarantined/discarded)
  • Critical: Improper cooling times—TCS foods not cooled fast enough (quarantined/discarded)

LouVUE’s Take: Triple threat! Three criticals in one kitchen: if the food wasn’t cooked right, wasn’t cooled right, and wasn’t cold enough, that’s a recipe for risk. Glad the bad batches were binned, but this is a serious warning sign. If you’re eating anything that needs to be kept cold or cooked right, double-check before you dig in.

🍻 Shenanigan’s

Address: 1611 NORRIS PLACE, LOUISVILLE, KY 40205
Score: 97
Grade: C
Violations:

  • Critical: TCS food not maintained at 41°F or below.

LouVUE’s Take: Low temp, high drama! When even bar food needs to stay cold, this isn’t the kind of shenanigans we like. Only takes one critical to ice your grade—so here’s hoping the next inspection is cooler in all the right ways.

🌮 SUPERMERCADO LA ROSITA

Address: 5059 PRESTON HWY, LOUISVILLE, KY 40213
Score: 96
Grade: C
Violations:

  • No specific violation details listed for this C grade.

LouVUE’s Take: Déjà vu, anyone? LA ROSITA shows up in both the follow-up and C-grade lists this week. Their follow-up scored a 99 (with no grade) and a C for a 96—mixed signals, but a C always means something critical wasn’t right. LouVUE is keeping a close eye—shoppers, stay tuned for updates.

The Check, Please: Stay Cool, Louisville!

Whew! This week brought a heatwave of C grades, but also a handful of redemption stories. Remember: C grades mean critical food safety risks—don’t ignore that red! Check those inspection grades before you chow down, and if you see a follow-up, read between the lines. This is your city, your food, and your health—demand transparency and safe practices every time you dine (or grab a snack on the go).
