A Mixed Bag This Week in the Derby City
April 13-19 served up quite the variety across Louisville's restaurant scene. While we saw some perfect scores that would make any chef proud, several establishments found themselves in hot water with critical violations that cut right to the heart of food safety. From country club kitchens to neighborhood pizza joints, this week's inspections reminded us that food safety standards apply everywhere.

A Quick Refresher on How the Grades Work in the Ville
- Grade A (green): A passing grade indicating a generally safe facility. Score of 85–100 with no priority violations — serious issues most likely to cause foodborne illness, such as improper food holding temperatures.
- Grade B (blue): Facility is "under review" while health officials work with them to pass future routine inspections. Issued after failing two routine inspections in a row, or automatically during a follow-up inspection if the facility had to close because of an imminent health hazard (regardless of prior grades). Patrons should be mindful.
- Grade C (red): Facility has failed its inspection. Issued for any of these reasons: (1) one or more priority violations, such as poor hygienic practices, lack of hot/cold water, or improper sanitizing — even with a score as high as 98; (2) score below 85 due to a high number of non-priority violations; or (3) an imminent health hazard requiring closure (e.g., infestation, loss of electricity or water). These are serious and require a follow-up within 7–10 days.
- Priority violations: High risk for foodborne illness. Even one is enough to drop a place to a C.
Second Servings: Follow-Up Results
Dollar Tree #01944 bounced back beautifully with a 98 score on their follow-up inspection, showing that a little attention to detail can really pay off.
Cautionary Cuisine: Red Flags This Week
Wildwood Country Club Kitchen on Bardstown Road earned a C with an 83 score, and the violations read like a food safety horror story. Employees were handling raw meat and ready-to-eat carrots without washing hands, eating customer food, and drinking beverages stored directly above food prep areas. Add in a dirty deli slicer, canned goods with rust, moldy strawberries, and unmarked leftovers, and you've got a perfect storm of potential foodborne illness risks.
LouVUE's Take: These aren't minor slip-ups — they're fundamental breakdowns in food safety protocol that put diners at serious risk.
Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar on Will Way scored 91 but still earned a C due to cold-holding temperature violations. Spinach dip, pico, ranch, coleslaw, lettuce garnish, nacho, and taco ingredients were all found above 50°F — well beyond the safe zone for preventing bacterial growth.
LouVUE's Take: Temperature control is Food Safety 101. When multiple items are out of the safe zone, it suggests systemic issues with equipment or procedures.
Jet's Pizza #007 on Bardstown Road managed an 86 but failed due to multiple critical violations: lack of food safety knowledge from management, pizza held at room temperature past safe time limits, chemicals stored next to food, and plumbing issues including sewage leaks.
LouVUE's Take: The combination of temperature abuse and cross-contamination risks makes this particularly concerning for a pizza operation.
Sankalp Louisville on Taylorsville Road scored 89 but had critical violations including dry goods stored near chemicals and sewage leaks at both hand and prep sinks.
LouVUE's Take: Sewage leaks in food prep areas are never acceptable — they create immediate contamination risks.
The Check, Please: High Marks Where They Matter
On the bright side, five establishments earned perfect 100s this week, including The Cheesecake Factory, Deborah Maryann's Soul Food Kitchen, and It's Tea Time 2. These scores prove that consistent excellence in food safety is absolutely achievable.
Remember: a C grade means these establishments need follow-up inspections within 7-10 days. Many will likely address their violations and be back to serving safely soon. Keep checking LouVUE for the latest updates on your favorite spots!
