Fresh Start to a Mixed Bag Week

Spring was in full bloom across Louisville from April 27 to May 3, but the restaurant inspection scene served up a mixed platter. While most of our 175 inspections came back squeaky clean, a handful of spots had some serious slip-ups that earned them the dreaded red C. From dish machine mishaps to compromised canned goods, this week reminded us why those health inspectors are worth their weight in Hot Browns.

LouVUE by the Numbers

This week's inspection breakdown:

Regular inspections: 164

Follow-up inspections: 8

Other inspections: 3

Total: 175 inspections

A Quick Refresher on How the Grades Work in the Ville

  • Grade A (green): A passing grade indicating a generally safe facility. Score of 85–100 with no priority violations — serious issues most likely to cause foodborne illness, such as improper food holding temperatures.
  • Grade B (blue): Facility is "under review" while health officials work with them to pass future routine inspections. Issued after failing two routine inspections in a row, or automatically during a follow-up inspection if the facility had to close because of an imminent health hazard (regardless of prior grades). Patrons should be mindful.
  • Grade C (red): Facility has failed its inspection. Issued for any of these reasons: (1) one or more priority violations, such as poor hygienic practices, lack of hot/cold water, or improper sanitizing — even with a score as high as 98; (2) score below 85 due to a high number of non-priority violations; or (3) an imminent health hazard requiring closure (e.g., infestation, loss of electricity or water). These are serious and require a follow-up within 7–10 days.
  • Priority violations: High risk for foodborne illness. Even one is enough to drop a place to a C.

Second Servings: Follow-ups Turn the Heat Up

Good news on the follow-up front! Several establishments that previously earned C grades managed to turn things around:

Xiang China Cafe bounced back beautifully with a 95, earning their A grade

Bubble House nearly aced their redemption round with a 98

Skyview Park also scored a solid 98 to reclaim their A status

However, Ali K Food Truck and O'Charley's both scored perfect 100s but remain stuck with B grades — a reminder that follow-up protocols keep facilities "under review" even after perfect scores.

Cautionary Cuisine: When Good Scores Go Bad

Five establishments earned C grades this week, proving that even decent numerical scores can't save you from critical violations:

Jaggers #804 (English Villa Dr) - Score: 94

The dish machine at this Fegenbush area spot wasn't reaching proper sanitizing temperatures — hot water systems need to hit at least 160°F to kill harmful bacteria. An employee was also lifting the machine cover before the rinse cycle finished, potentially contaminating clean dishes.

LouVUE's Take: High scores mean nothing when your clean dishes aren't actually clean. This is exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes issue that makes inspections so valuable.

4th Ave United Methodist Church (W St Catherine St) - Score: 94

Staff weren't washing hands after eating and drinking, creating contamination risks. More alarming: inspectors found damaged canned goods including swollen, leaking, and severely dented cans of mushrooms, sausage gravy, and tomatoes — all signs of potential botulism risk. The items were destroyed on-site.

LouVUE's Take: Even community kitchens need professional-level food safety. Damaged canned goods are never worth the risk.

Gas-N-Go (Fegenbush Ln) - Score: 90

Supermercado Guanajuato (Bardstown Rd) - Score: 92

A To Z Food Mart (Fegenbush Ln) - Score: 85

Unfortunately, specific violation details weren't available for these three establishments.

The Check, Please: Perfect Scores Worth Celebrating

Let's end on a high note! Five establishments earned perfect 100s this week: Ville Nutrition, Charcoal Restaurant, AFC Sushi @ Kroger #379, Snow Fruit @ Kroger L-379, and Supreme Deli @ Kroger L-379.

Remember, a C grade means a follow-up is required within 7-10 days — it doesn't necessarily mean these places are unsafe today. But it's always smart to check back here at LouVUE before your next dining adventure. After all, knowledge is the best seasoning for any meal!
