A Tale of Two Temperatures: Hot Scores and Cold Violations

Louisville's restaurant inspection scene served up quite the mixed plate from March 9-15, with inspectors dishing out everything from perfect hundreds to some seriously concerning critical violations. While most establishments kept their culinary acts together, a handful found themselves in hot water — quite literally in some cases.

LouVUE by the Numbers

This week's inspection appetite was hearty, with health officials making the rounds to 174 establishments:

  • Regular inspections: 164
  • Follow-up inspections: 7
  • Survey inspections: 2
  • Other: 1

A Quick Refresher on How the Grades Work in the Ville

  • Grade A (green): Score 85–100% and no critical violations.
  • Grade B (blue): Often the outcome of passing a follow-up after previous issues or a closure. This is a concern and deserves attention because it typically means there were still issues after a follow-up or that two consecutive regular inspections were failed. Patrons should be mindful.
  • Grade C (red): Score below 85% or any critical violation. One critical violation automatically earns a C. These are serious and require a follow-up within 7–10 days.
  • Critical violations: High risk for foodborne illness. Even one is enough to drop a place to a C.

Second Servings: Follow-ups Rise to the Occasion

The good news came hot off the grill this week with seven establishments successfully turning their grades around. AFC Sushi @ Kroger #764, Speedway #9643, Sakura Blue, White Castle #28, Cask Southern Kitchen & Bar, and Misawa Hibachi & Sushi Bar all earned their redemption, with most achieving perfect 100s or near-perfect scores. Talk about a comeback tour that would make any Louisville Cardinal proud!

Cautionary Cuisine: When Service Gets Sloppy

Unfortunately, five establishments found themselves needing a serious recipe revision:

Waffle House #1398 (Standiford Plaza) earned a troubling 76 score with multiple critical violations including improper cold and hot holding temperatures — meaning food wasn't kept at safe temperatures to prevent bacterial growth. Food-contact surfaces weren't properly cleaned and sanitized, and staff weren't following proper eating and tasting protocols. LouVUE's Take: This is a concerning cluster of basic food safety failures at a 24-hour spot where temperature control is absolutely critical.

Chopstick House (West Broadway) scored a solid 93 but earned a C for bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods — staff were touching food that goes straight to customers without gloves or utensils. LouVUE's Take: High score aside, this violation puts customers at direct risk of contamination from unwashed hands.

Brass Social (Electron Drive) managed a 92 but stumbled with unsanitized food-contact surfaces and improper cold holding temperatures. LouVUE's Take: For a social spot, these violations are antisocial behavior toward food safety — surfaces touching food must be properly sanitized.

Miguelon Grocery Store (Shepherdsville Road) scored 94 but still earned a C, suggesting critical violations weren't specified in our data. LouVUE's Take: The high score makes this mysterious — check back for follow-up details.

Gustavo's Mexican Grill (Hurstbourne Parkway) posted an 88 with violations including staff eating/tasting improperly, serving food in poor condition, and contaminated food-contact surfaces. LouVUE's Take: Multiple violations suggest systemic issues with basic food handling protocols that need immediate attention.

The Check, Please: Perfect Scores Deserve Recognition

While we focus on the fixes needed, let's tip our hats to the week's perfect performers: Heavenly Host Cakes & Catering, Barry Bagels, Snow Fruit @ Kroger L-780, Seelbach Old Seelbach Bar, and Seelbach Starbucks Coffee all earned flawless 100s.

Remember, a C-grade doesn't mean permanent closure — it means these establishments need to clean up their act within 7-10 days. Keep checking LouVUE for updates, and as always, trust your instincts when dining out in Derby City.
