Louisville's Kitchen Confidential: July 27 – August 2, 2026

Summer's still sizzling in the Ville, and so were a few reach-in coolers that had no business running warm. This week brought 140 inspections across the city — from Cardinal Stadium suites to Bardstown Road staples — with some kitchens earning gold stars and others earning a stern talking-to. Let's dig in.

LouVUE by the Numbers

  • Regular inspections: 132
  • Follow-ups: 6
  • Other: 2
  • Total: 140

A Quick Refresher on How the Grades Work in the Ville

  • Grade A (green): A passing grade indicating a generally safe facility. Score of 85–100 with no priority violations — serious issues most likely to cause foodborne illness, such as improper food holding temperatures.
  • Grade B (blue): Facility is "under review" while health officials work with them to pass future routine inspections. Issued after failing two routine inspections in a row, or automatically during a follow-up inspection if the facility had to close because of an imminent health hazard (regardless of prior grades). Patrons should be mindful.
  • Grade C (red): Facility has failed its inspection. Issued for any of these reasons: (1) one or more priority violations, such as poor hygienic practices, lack of hot/cold water, or improper sanitizing — even with a score as high as 98; (2) score below 85 due to a high number of non-priority violations; or (3) an imminent health hazard requiring closure (e.g., infestation, loss of electricity or water). These are serious and require a follow-up within 7–10 days.
  • Priority violations: High risk for foodborne illness. Even one is enough to drop a place to a C.

Second Servings: Redemption Arcs and Reheated Trouble

Six follow-ups this week, and the results were a mixed grill:

  • Back on top: Chong Garden (99!), Le Moo (a perfect 100), and Taqueria Los Gorditos (99) all bounced back to Grade A. That's a proper glow-up.
  • Still simmering: La Guera Taqueria failed its follow-up again with a 93 — cold holding units running 47–50°F. Two C's in a row means this one's now on thin ice for a possible B.
  • Fumbled the handoff: Olive Garden #1852 went from A to C on follow-up, with TCS foods found sitting at 45–51°F (quarantined on-site, at least). Breadsticks are still safe; the cooler, less so.
  • Kroger L-350 (ID: 34666) scored a solid 98 on follow-up — no letter grade listed, but the numbers speak for themselves.

Cautionary Cuisine: This Week's Grade C Club

Eight spots failed inspection this week. Here's the rundown:

Stars Coffee Shop — Score: 92

Employees eating/drinking in unauthorized areas, plus no approved sanitizer on site for food-contact surfaces (both corrected on the spot).

LouVUE's Take: Fixed fast, but a coffee shop with no sanitizer is a latte too risky for comfort.

La Guera Taqueria — Score: 93

TCS foods held at 47–50°F instead of the required 41°F or below.

LouVUE's Take: Second strike this week — the follow-up clock is ticking louder.

Graeter's Ice Cream — Score: 90

Dairy held at 48–54°F, a manager who couldn't demonstrate food safety know-how, and spoiled half-and-half in the mix.

LouVUE's Take: Nothing sours a sundae like curdled cream. Cool it down, folks.

Christi's Cafe — Score: 84

A loaded plate of violations: unlidded drink stored over food, bare-hand contact with toast, a dead sanitizer machine, eggs held at 50–56°F, and no consumer advisory for undercooked eggs on the menu.

LouVUE's Take: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day — and also, apparently, the most violated.

Jade Garden — Score: 81

Roaches in the ice machine, cabbage exposed to eating/drinking in the prep area, chicken cooling improperly at 72°F after three hours, and hands not washed between snacking and cooking.

LouVUE's Take: This one's a full house of red flags. Definitely due a careful follow-up.

Most Blessed Sacrament — Score: 96

Bare-hand contact preparing ready-to-eat tomatoes and onions (corrected on site).

LouVUE's Take: One quick fix away from a clean bill — grade reflects the rule, not a risky kitchen.

Olive Garden #1852 — Score: 96

TCS foods held at 45–51°F, though quarantined immediately.

LouVUE's Take: Good instincts pulling the food, but the cooler itself needs a checkup.

Aspen Creek — Score: 87

Multiple cold holding failures (tomatoes at 60°F, raw chicken at 50°F, raw fish at 56°F), an employee who handled raw chicken then shrimp without washing hands, and an unlabeled chemical bottle.

LouVUE's Take: A cascade of temperature troubles — this one warrants a close watch on the follow-up.

The Check, Please: Keep Us in Your Rotation

Plenty of star performers this week too — shoutout to Holsopple Restaurant and a handful of Cardinal Stadium concession stands that all pulled off perfect 100s. Game day snacks, inspected and approved.

As always: a C isn't a life sentence — it's a "come back and check your work" from the health department. But knowing which coolers are running warm before you order? That's what we're here for. See you at the table next week, Louisville.
